Infidelity counseling is not one thing. Some practices build their work around a named couples method, some focus on the betrayed partner, and some see each person alone before bringing the couple together. What matters is that a practice is clear about how it works, so you can judge the fit.
Every practice below was checked on its own website in September 2026, and we describe each one using only what its site says. Call before booking, because staffing and openings change.
How we chose
- The practice's own website says it works with infidelity, affairs or betrayal.
- It is based in the Charlotte area.
- It publishes its approach, the methods it uses, or who it works with (couples, individuals or both).
- It says whether it sees the betrayed partner, the partner who had the affair, or both, alone or together.
- We favored practices that also publish clinician credentials or insurance and payment information.

What affair recovery counseling usually involves
Most affair recovery work moves through a few broad stages, whatever the method is called. Early sessions deal with the crisis: sleep, what to tell family, and whether the affair has ended. Next comes accountability, where the partner who had the affair answers questions and practices openness. Later, the couple looks at the relationship before the affair and decides what, if anything, they want to build.
Many therapists also see each partner alone at some point, so the betrayed partner can speak freely and the other partner can look at their choices without defending them.
- Ask a practice: Do you see couples, individuals or both? Do you use a named method? What happens if one of us wants to stop?
No one can promise the relationship survives
Be wary of anyone who tells you counseling is certain to keep a marriage together. No one can know that in advance. Some couples rebuild, some separate with less damage, and some partners come mainly for their own clarity. A good counselor supports the decision you reach, not a result chosen in advance.
If you or your partner are thinking about harming yourselves, call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline). If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911.
Questions people ask
- Should we see a couples counselor or go separately?
- Often both. Many of the practices above see each partner alone as well as together, and some people start individually before deciding whether to try couples work.
- Does insurance cover infidelity counseling?
- It depends on your plan and the practice. Laura Bass Counseling is in network with Aetna and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. Check each practice's own site and your insurer before booking.
- What if my partner will not come?
- You can still get support on your own. Individual counseling can help you sort through what happened and what you want next.
