Where can you get counseling in Saluda, Columbus or Mill Spring?
Most in-person counseling in Polk County is in or near Columbus, the county seat. That includes Laura Bass Counseling's part-time office at The Healing Cottage, opened in 2024, and the community clinics listed in our guide to therapists in Tryon and Polk County. For Saluda there is also a primary care and behavioral health clinic in town, and for the north of the county Hendersonville is within reach.
Polk County's own site lists three municipalities: Columbus, Tryon and Saluda. Much of the county lives outside them, in places the state gazetteer still records as towns but that have long been inactive in municipal affairs, such as Mill Spring and Lynn, and in communities such as Green Creek and Sunny View. The county describes itself as sitting in a transition zone between the Blue Ridge and the Piedmont, which is why people call it the foothills.
Distances to the Columbus office
These are approximate road distances to the center of Columbus, measured with a public route planner. Real drives depend on the time of day and where exactly you start.
- Lynn: about three miles on NC 108, a few minutes.
- Mill Spring: about four miles on NC 108.
- Tryon: about five miles on NC 108, roughly ten minutes.
- Saluda: about ten miles, down I-26 and US 74 to exit 67, then NC 108.
- Sunny View: about ten miles, by NC 9 and NC 108.
- Green Creek: about eleven or twelve miles, by NC 9, US 74 and NC 108.
- Landrum, SC: about eight miles, by SC 14, I-26 and NC 108.
Saluda: up the mountain
Saluda is the smallest of Polk County's three towns, with 631 people at the 2020 Census and a median age of 59.2. It sits higher in the Blue Ridge than Columbus or Tryon, and in winter that matters: the drive down the interstate to Columbus is short in miles, but ice and fog are worth planning around. If the weather turns, ask Laura whether a video session is an option rather than risking the road.
Saluda has some health care of its own. AdventHealth runs a family medicine and behavioral health clinic on Ozone Drive in Saluda, and its behavioral health page describes virtual treatment for depression, anxiety, grief and trauma. Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, now part of Agape Care Group, lists a Saluda location as well, and offers grief support to the families of its patients.
Columbus: the county seat
Columbus was incorporated in 1857 as the seat of the new Polk County, and it is still where the courthouse, county services and most of the county's clinics are. It had 1,060 residents at the 2020 Census. For people who live in town, the Healing Cottage is close enough that counseling can fit around a lunch hour or an errand at the county offices, depending on which days Laura is in.
Columbus is also where several public services sit. Blue Ridge Health at 161 Walker Street is Vaya Health's weekday walk-in crisis center for Polk County (828-894-2222), offering same-day assessments with no appointment. AdventHealth Polk, formerly St. Luke's Hospital, has a 24-hour emergency room in Columbus and runs Senior Life Solutions, an intensive outpatient counseling program for adults over 65 (828-894-9890). The Meeting Place senior center on Carmel Lane (828-894-0001) serves residents 60 and older.
Mill Spring, Lynn, Green Creek and Sunny View
Mill Spring, in the center of the county, is home to the Tryon International Equestrian Center off US 74 at exit 170, and to many people who work with horses or moved to the area for them. Lynn sits on Skyuka Creek between Tryon and Columbus. Green Creek is a township in the east of the county, and Sunny View a community in the north on Walnut Creek.
Out here the issue is less the distance to an office than the number of things competing for the day: farm work, long commutes, caring for parents, irregular hours around horse shows and seasonal work. If a particular day or time of day suits you best, say so when you first get in touch. A therapist who knows your constraints can tell you straight away whether the schedule is workable.
